BP, a global energy giant, has recently formally notified the UK government in writing of its withdrawal of the development application for the H2Teesside project.
The project was originally planned to build a low-carbon hydrogen and carbon capture hub with an annual output of 160,000 tonnes in northeast England, and was expected to become one of the largest hydrogen plants in the UK.As a core component of BP’s low-carbon strategy, the H2Teesside project has attracted significant attention since it was first announced in 2021, and was originally scheduled to enter commercial operation in 2028.
The reason for the suspension is likely that the land plot designated for the project is set to be used for other purposes, which has sparked controversy: planning permission for a data center on the site was already granted in August.
Notably, this is not the first time BP has scaled back its hydrogen energy business; it has previously canceled or put on hold more than 20 hydrogen energy projects.Meanwhile, around the same time, ExxonMobil, the U.S. energy giant, also announced the suspension of a hydrogen energy project.
This may also indicate that the new energy market will re-evaluate the commercial viability of the hydrogen energy pathway.
